Is There a Difference Between Memory Care and Assisted Living?

It is estimated that almost 70 percent of Americans will need long term care, according to research from the U. S. Department of Heath and Human Services. With most of us needing some form of long-term care for ourselves or our loved ones, it is important to be familiar with the options available. The two most popular options are assisted living and memory care. What are the differences, and which option is right for you?

Assisted living communities provide help for residents who need assistance with activities of daily living, or ADLs, dressing, bathing, and toileting. Support is provided, but the goal at a quality assisted living community is to promote as much independence as possible while providing care and round-the-clock-services. In addition to meal services, assisted living communities often provide access to physical therapy and transportation services. Extra services may include activities to appeal to a wide variety of interests.

Memory care communities provide similar services to assisted living communities, but focus additional efforts toward the safety and needs of people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Some assisted living communities offer memory care wings or services, but assisted living is not the same as dedicated memory care. A memory care community is designed to serve the needs of residents with cognitive impairment in every way – from layouts that prevent wandering to staff that is trained to work with people who have dementia. High quality memory care communities work to stimulate residents with activities proven to be of benefit those with cognitive difficulties.

At Parc Provence, we honor our role as leaders in memory care. Our residents feel at home in our interconnected households that all open to a central activity promenade. The innovative, secure design of our grounds allows residents to explore our lush patios and gardens, as well as common areas. Activities including art and music therapy – proven to stimulate the entire brain – provide the very best in cognitive care. It’s a safe, stimulating, comfortable community with highly trained, caring professionals available at every turn and around the clock.

At Parc Provence, we empower senior adults to function at their highest and best potential every day because every moment matters. If you would like to learn more about our memory care community or to schedule a tour, contact us today.
