    More Than Just Memory

When we think of Alzheimer’s symptoms, we think of memory loss. While memory loss is the most obvious concern, there are other issues that are frequently associated with this disorder. What more than memory loss is part of Alzheimer’s disease?

Physical symptoms can be present in addition to memory loss.

Alzheimer’s disease can cause physical symptoms. They include loss of appetite and restlessness. Some people may experience trouble combining muscle movements or can eventually show signs of impaired speech. Physical symptoms may become more pronounced as the part of the brain that controls movement is affected. Physical and occupational therapy can help maintain physical abilities as long as possible.

    Alzheimer’s disease can affect mood.

People who have Alzheimer’s disease can experience mood swings without realizing it. Abnormal agitation, personality changes, and anger can be upsetting for loved ones. It can be common for people who have Alzheimer’s to exhibit unusual signs of aggression, as well. That’s why it is especially important for caregivers and family members to understand that the disease is affecting the brain. The part of the brain that is responsible for regulating mood may be affected by the disorder. Experts recommend letting any outbursts run their course. Arguing will likely be unproductive, so it is best not to correct the person and just try to move on.

    Watch for psychological symptoms.

While coming to terms with the reality of memory loss, depression can be a concern for people with Alzheimer’s. The disease can also cause additional psychological symptoms as it progresses. Many people experience episodes of paranoia. They might think they are being followed or watched. This can be exacerbated by the fact that they may not recognize familiar faces and wonder why people want to talk to them. Hallucinations can also occur, so loved ones should be aware of this possibility. It is recommended that caregivers should not try to convince the person experiencing theses types of psychological symptoms that what they believe to be true is not really happening. They should just go along with the situation to achieve the best outcome.
