Living with Memory Loss: Advice for Daily Life

Living with memory loss can present challenges for daily living. With over 13 years of experience as The Leader in Memory Care, we have compiled advice for daily life for people living with memory loss. These proven ideas have been collected from our staff, the Parc Provence community, and medical professionals. We hope this advice provides insight and comfort for you.

    Accept Help

The advice offered most often to those living with memory loss is to accept help when you need it. No one can do it alone – and living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, or other form of cognitive disorder gives you every reason to accept help. Asking for help can be humbling, and you may already be anticipating a loss of independence that many assume will occur after the diagnosis of a memory disorder. However, asking for and accepting help may be exactly what you need to live well. Get the help you need to live well now.

Another option is professional help. Hire help for specific services, or consider high quality residential memory care. Parc Provence offers established, trusted memory care in St. Louis in a comfortable, home-like setting. In addition, by creating a daily schedule of activities and entertainment, Parc Provence encourages our residents to remain active, engaged, and involved in life while having fun!

    Develop A Routine

Some practical tips for daily life involved routines that help solve problems created by memory loss. Routines help people with Alzheimer’s and dementia regain a sense of control over their lives. It also serves as a coping strategy and reduces stress. Some favorite ideas include the following:

    • When bathing, keep soaps, shampoo and conditioner on one side of the shower or bath. After using each item, place it on the other side so you know you are finished with that and can move on to the next.
    • If you are responsible for your own medications, put a sticker or sticky note on the bottle after you take each one. Write a note saying, “Already taken!” on the sticker so you know not to repeat the dose.
    • Have clothing that is easy to put on and take off, mixes and matches well, and that layers easily. Frustration over clothing is wasted energy. Focus on creating joyful moments instead!

The key is to find a system that works for you. Develop a routine that helps you know where things should be and when. Order and consistency in daily life can help you notice when something isn’t quite right.
